Black Friday and Cyber Monday have a new post-holiday rival, and it’s a charitable one.
United Way of Lewis County announced Saturday it has joined the Giving Tuesday movement, a broad effort to harness the collective power of charities, families, businesses and individuals. The event, which will peak Tuesday, is about “creating a day to come together to do good, improve our community, and celebrate giving,” according to a release from the United Way of Lewis County.
Beginning Saturday, the first $2,000 in donations made to the United Way of Lewis County will be matched by an anonymous community member, according to the release.
United Way is encouraging monetary donations, but Executive Director Debbie Campbell noted that there is more than one way to give back to the community and take part in Giving Tuesday.
“Whether you donate money or time, giving back is beneficial — and not just for the recipients. Research has shown that the old adage, ‘it’s better to give than to receive’ is true after all,” Campbell said in a release.
